Moment Tensors of Ring‐Faulting at Active Volcanoes: Insights Into Vertical‐CLVD Earthquakes at the Sierra Negra Caldera, Galápagos Islands

چکیده
Moderate earthquakes (Mw > 5) with moment tensors (MTs) dominated by a vertical compensated-linear-vector-dipole (vertical-CLVD) component are often generated dip slip along curved ring-fault system at active volcanoes. However, relating their MTs to parameters has been proved difficult. The objective of this study is find robust way estimating some based on MT solutions obtained from long-period seismic records. We first model the idealized ring-faulting and show that components representing vertical-CLVD strike-slip mechanisms resolvable deviatoric inversion using waves, whereas dip-slip mechanism indeterminate owing shallow source depth. then propose new method for arc angle orientation two components. For validation, we earthquake occurred during 2005 volcanic activity Sierra Negra caldera, Galápagos Islands. stably determined our estimation consistent geometry identified previous geodetic studies field surveys. also estimate took place 2018 revealing significant differences between in terms direction location. These results usefulness parameters, enabling us examine kinematics structures below volcanoes ring faults distributed globally.

Global observation of vertical-CLVD earthquakes at active volcanoes
[1] Some of the largest and most anomalous volcanic earthquakes have non-double-couple focal mechanisms. Here, we investigate the link between volcanic unrest and the occurrence of non-double-couple earthquakes with dominant vertical tension or pressure axes, known as vertical compensated-linear-vector-dipole (vertical-CLVD) earthquakes. We determine focal mechanisms for 313 target earthquakes ...
متن کاملPhysical mechanisms for vertical-CLVD earthquakes at active volcanoes
[1] Many volcanic earthquakes large enough to be detected globally have anomalous focal mechanisms and frequency content. In a previous study, we examined the relationship between active volcanism and the occurrence of a specific type of shallow, non-double-couple earthquake. We identified 101 earthquakes with vertical compensated-linear-vector-dipole (vertical-CLVD) focal mechanisms that took ...
متن کاملConstraints on Magma Chamber Geometry at Sierra Negra Volcano, Galápagos Islands, based on InSAR Observations
We investigate the problem of estimating magma chamber geometry using InSAR observations of Sierra Negra volcano, Galápagos. Ascending and descending interferograms are combined to determine vertical and one horizontal component of displacement. The ratio of maximum horizontal to vertical displacement suggests a sill-like source. Spherical or stock-like bodies are inconsistent with the data. We...

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP), has gained significant interests in biotechnology, especially in biosensor field and diagnostic test kits. Hence, its solvent-exposed lysine residues 174, 232, and 241 have been frequently modified with the aim of improving its stability and catalytic efficiency. In this computational study, we investigated the effects of Lys-to-Glu substitutions on HRP structure t...
متن کاملMonitoring super-volcanoes: geophysical and geochemical signals at Yellowstone and other large caldera systems.
Earth's largest calderas form as the ground collapses during immense volcanic eruptions, when hundreds to thousands of cubic kilometres of magma are explosively withdrawn from the Earth's crust over a period of days to weeks. Continuing long after such great eruptions, the resulting calderas often exhibit pronounced unrest, with frequent earthquakes, alternating uplift and subsidence of the gro...
